Five Roof Cleaning Tips

FIVE ROOF CLEANING TIPS

This FIVE ROOF CLEANING TIPS post is helpful for anyone providing professional roof cleaning service.  If you are new to the pressure washing industry, you may not be able to provide roof cleaning service at the start.  But as you grow your business, you can purchase equipment and expand the services you offer.  Roof cleaning is certainly a great service to add for any pressure washing business.  I hope these FIVE ROOF CLEANING TIPS help you decide if this service is right for your company.

MOSS AND LICHEN

Setting customer expectations is the first of my FIVE ROOF CLEANING TIPS when dealing with moss and lichen.  It’s important that the customer understands that moss and lichen will not be removed from the roof.  It will change color and usually turns white.  We explain that the mix we use will kill the moss and lichen, which is why it turns white.  With wind and rainfall over time, it will eventually loosen from the tiles but we never discuss a specific time frame.  We suggest explaining that it didn’t get there over night, so it won’t go away over night either.  Using pressure to attempt to remove moss and lichen from the roof will only do more damage to the integrity of the roof.

SPRAYING TECHNIQUE

The second of the FIVE ROOF CLEANING TIPS is DO NOT FLOOD THE ROOF!  The shingles just need to be wet but when water runs off, you’re simply wasting product and could possibly harm plant life below.  We use our 10 Gallon Per Minute Kingslinger soft wash system with a 2 Gallon Per Minute tip. This helps me control and preserve solution.

REMAINING TIPS

For the full details of the remaining FIVE ROOF CLEANING TIPS, be sure and watch the entire video.  We demonstrate use of Tyvek House Wrap from Lowe’s to assist with property protection.  Wetting plants before, during, and after the project is important to protecting the plant life from any degree of damage.  I also explain the use of guns versus using a ball valve.  If this post has been helpful, here is another one you might be interested in.

Ball Valve Installation

BALL VALVE INSTALLATION

All of our trucks and trailers now have a ball valve installation that we recommend.  It is a three way valve that allows us to make a switch.  We can switch from the tank fill to a garden hose quickly and easily.  Some of examples for using this include filling a bucket, or the need for a high wash station.  If we need light pressure for anything like rinsing off the truck or anything else, it’s much easier than using a drain hose.

HOW BALL VALVE INSTALLATION WORKS

Water arrives to our rigs through the garden hose reel.  It then flows directly into the ball valve.  It can easily switch from filling the tank to a rig mounted garden hose.  With several different nozzles, you are able to use it in different ways.  For example, we have a fireman’s nozzle that can be purchased from Home Depot or Lowe’s.  This nozzle provides a wide range or garden hose pressure from a pretty long, straight stream to nothing more than a trickle if needed.  It’s ideal for filling a soap bucket without creating a lot of splashing suds.  In addition, we have a second nozzle that provides stronger pressure and a longer stream.  It’s the same nozzle that we use for just rinsing houses using a dedicated pump.

TRAILER VIEW

In this video, we also provide a quick view of the entire trailer.  I have been testing a booster pump, but eventually concluded it’s not really worth using.  I was not impressed at all!  So if you have any questions about this ball valve installation, just shoot me an email and I’ll answer as quickly as I’m able.  Be sure and subscribe to our YOUTUBE CHANNEL for more helpful videos.  Perhaps you would enjoy another post about a newer pressure washing truck rig.

Downstream Injector Check Valve

Downstream Injector Check Valve

For about the last eight months to a year I have been using a Downstream Injector Check Valve for Soft Washing. These not only help the injectors last longer, since we are removing the ball and spring, but they also actually make the mix a little stronger. We have been able to clean some porous surfaces that have the black algae stains on them, a little faster than using the injectors how they come. They are available on my store HERE .

Very easy to install, you simply remove the hose barb from the Downstream Injector.  Then you remove the ball and spring, which will pop out anyway. Attache the check valve where the hose barb was, and you are ready to attach your hose and start downstreaming.

Downstream-Injector-Check-valve

For the last few years there has has been a lot of mis-information about what soft washing is and isn’t.  As long as y9u are using low pressure to apply your chemical mix, and rinsing under low pressure, you are Soft Washing.  The use of a dedicated pump does not dictate that you are soft washing.   Downstreaming is the original soft wash method that I was taught to use way back in 1979.

While a dedicated pump will allow you to apply a stronger mix than downstreaming,  just like a pump up sprayer will.  In fact, thats all a dedicated pump is, a pump up sprayer on steroids.  If you want to clean buildings and houses faster, then using a downstream injector check valve is the way to go.  Your mix will be much stronger than a traditional injector.

I always encourage people starting a pressure washing business, to learn how to downstream first. This will help you learn to clean in a traditional way, and help prevent damage to landscape.

Pressure Washing Equipment Oil

Pressure Washing Equipment Oil

When owning pressure washing equipment it is very important to properly maintain your equipment.  Using the correct Pressure Washing Equipment Oil for your machines is very important.  I have switched all my equipment and trucks to the High Performance Lubricants brand of oils.  My equipment and trucks run much smoother and I also have more time between changes.  This saves me time and money.

There are many options out there to consider for Pressure Washing Equipment Oil, and most of us do like I have done.  Go to the auto parts store and get the oil that we feel is the best value.  That’s all well and good, but those oils are not really the best for the equipment we use, and how much and often we run them.

The High Performance Lubricant brand of oils do exactly as they say, give you High Performance.  I stock and sell them in our store, because I feel so strongly about them. You can find the ENGINE OIL HERE.

Also available on the store Site is Pressure Washing Pump Oil as well as Air Compressor Oil if you use an AODD pump for Soft Washing like I do.

pressure washing equipment oil

These oils are competitively priced, only a little bit higher than the store bought brands.  The little extra you spend, you will make up on extended equipment life, less failures, and more time between oil maintenance changes.  Always remember to change your oil filter when changing engine oil.

If you have any questions feel free to email me or use the contact form on this site.  You can also text me at 281-883-3630.  Be sure to check out our online pressure washing school if you are starting a pressure washing business.  With over 200 training videos you will drastically cut your learning curve.

PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS

PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS

Paying close attention to PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS is vital for new start up companies.  We understand that some believe simply buying a pressure washing machine is enough to start a business.  But nothing could be farther from the truth!  To be successful, PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS must be given adequate consideration before you begin investing in equipment.  Specifically, there are three PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS to vet fully and carefully in order to succeed.

IN THE OFFICE

You will need to consider who will answer the phone, and how will they convert inquiries into business.  Another factor is the process of estimating.  Each potential customer will need to provide specific details regarding the scope of work needed.  And of course, this will need to be recorded carefully and completely.  Is there a gate code?  Are there any pets?  Will the customer be home or away while work is completed? And how will you write the estimate?  Will you be using google maps street view and other online tools?  Or do you plan to see the property before writing up an estimate?  Will it be a paper or digital estimate?  You will also want to keep a customer database.  In addition, a marketing strategy is a major component of PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS in the office.  And did we say accounting?  How will you receive payment?

ON THE JOB

You will need a clear statement of policies and procedures guiding actual work on the job.  From the moment you arrive until you leave after completing the work, what are the critical, common steps to take.  How is the property prepared for work to protect from damage?  A plan must be in place for things such as light fixtures, furnishings, plants, and windows.  Not to mention electrical outlets and boxes, a/c unit and even possible existing damage to the structure itself are important considerations. PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS on the job is an immense help when it comes to completing the work efficiently, professionally, and profitably. Time for these systems must be factored into every estimate.

pressure washing business systems

FOLLOW UP

Once the job is the complete, how will you follow up?  Will you send each customer a thank you card?  Do you plan to utilize a survey to improve customer service?  Will a return visit be scheduled?  Do you provide a satisfaction guarantee?  If so, this means some customers may require a return visit to touch up any missed areas.  If the customer is disappointed with service, you’ll want to make it right.  This will help ensure future business with them and increase the chance of a positive referral.  Speaking of referrals, will a referral strategy be part of your PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS follow up?  A customer database will allow you to reach out to them again in the future.  Recording vital contact information such as name, address, phone numbers and emails is imperative for a successful PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS follow up strategy.

We are fully convinced that all of the equipment you invest in will sit idle without PRESSURE WASHING BUSINESS SYSTEMS.  These systems need to be in place for the office, on the job, and follow up before you complete your first project.  If not, you will find yourself scratching your head and wondering what to do next!

Through out the year we have several Pressure Washing Training Events that you can attend.  If you live outside the Houston area, you can also become a member of our Online Video School.  For more information on the training we offer feel free to email me at pressurecleaningschool@gmail.com. Be sure to visit our You Tube Channel and subscribe.

Pressure Washing Training Houston

Pressure Washing Training Houston

We are adding a different kind of school to our schedule this year.  For the past 6 years I have been offering a 2 day monthly Pressure Washing Training Houston Texas school.  This October I and we will be hosting a 2 day school October 19-20, 2019.

The last few years I have noticed that many start up companies are not comfortable with proper cleaning techniques and how to price jobs.  There are far to many that think soft washing can only be done with a 12V pump.  Because most assume a pressure washer can only be used for cleaning concrete or porous surfaces.  Knowing how to sell your services and how to create value gives way to bidding a low price just to get the job.  Once this happens your company is not profitable and therefore not sustainable for the long term.

Power Wash Training That Makes A Difference

Pressure Washing Training Houston Texas

Not only are we going to teach you proper cleaning techniques, we are also going to spend time on the Business End of your company.  Pricing commercial and residential jobs, creating value in your services at fair prices for you and your customer.  Managing Customers, Property Protection, Chemical Mixes and Ratios, How to save time on the Job Site, Soft Washing vs. Pressure Washing and how to identify surfaces, stains and application methods are just a few of the classes we will be teaching on.

This school is being held at the Country Inn & Suites located at 20611 US-59 Humble Texas.  We have a special room rate of 70$ a night.  Just mention that you are attending the Doug Rucker School.  You can call the Hotel directly at 2814464977.  If you are flying in, I suggest flying into the Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, (IAH).  The hotel has a free shuttle that can pick you up and take you back when the school is over.

It is my desire that this Pressure Washing Training Houston Texas school will be a Difference Maker and help take your business to the next level.  The cost of this two day training school is $359.00 and you can register by CLICKING HERE.

Pressure Washing School FAQ’s

Pressure Washing School FAQ’s

For the last 10 years, we have been holding our monthly school in Houston, Texas. Here are some Pressure Washing School FAQ’s that will help you with questions you may have. Please feel free to text me at 2818833630 or email at pressurecleaningschool@gmail.com if you have questions you don’t find here.

When are the schools?

This monthly school in Houston is held once a month and usually on the second Monday and Tuesday of every month. The 2021 Schedule is as follows:  January 11-12, February 8-9, March 8-9, April 12,13 May 10-11, June 14-15, July 12-13, August 16-17, September 13-14, October 11-12, November 8-9, and December 6-7.

What is the cost to attend the monthly schools?

If you are doing business outside of the Houston TX area, the cost is $750.00. Any additional attendees, the cost is $375.00 per additional attendee.

If you will be doing business in the Houston TX area, then the cost is $1500.00. If you are bringing an additional attendee, then the cost for the additional attendee is $750.00 per additional attendee.

Why does it cost double the price just because I am from Houston

Couple of reasons: first, I am training my own local competition, and second, it is not fair to the attendees that travel to Houston and have travel, lodging, and meal expenses.  It levels the playing field as far as a true cost for both local and out-of-area attendees.

What type of training happens at the monthly school?

I teach Residential Exterior Cleaning only. This includes House Washing, Roof Cleaning, Driveway Cleaning, I do not teach commercial, fleet wash, kitchen hood cleaning, wood restoration or any other type of pressure washing service. It is purely residential cleaning only.

What type of training will I receive?

You will receive “hands on” field training as well as classroom training. One day of training is held either outside at my home, or on an actual job site, as we teach you how we clean a roof, a house, and a driveway. During this training, we will go over Spraying Techniques, Soft Washing, Pressure Washing, Different Chemical Application methods for Soft Washing and Pressure Washing, how we set up on a job site, planning and visualizing the job, Chemical Mix Ratios, what I look for when I am bidding a job as well as what I look for protecting the property, plants, pets and more. This is training is done at my home or on a job site when available.

Day Two

The second day of training is classroom training and is held at our office. The classroom portion consists of PowerPoint presentations that cover House Washing and Roof Cleaning, equipment needed, mixing ratios, different application methods, bidding residential jobs, preparing the job site, identifying surfaces, stains and best application methods, and more. We also have PowerPoint presentations that will cover roof cleaning, concrete cleaning, and plant and property protection.

Each day starts at about 8:30am, at my house, unless advised a different start time, and we usually finish by 1:00-2:00 each day. Please do not arrive earlier than 8:30am or the designated start time given to you.

Travel and Lodging Recommendations

I recommend that you fly into the Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) as it is only 10-15 from my house. The hotel that I recommend is the Country Inn and Suites located at 20611 Highway 59 N, Humble Tx 77338, (281) 446-4977.  Room Rates are $70.00 per night, using the code DougRuckerSchool. This hotel is just 10 minutes from my office, and has plenty of eating, shopping and even a movie theatre nearby. They have a shuttle available to pick you up from the airport, as well as take you anywhere within 5 miles of the Hotel during your stay. There are many other choices for lodging near me; you would just want to stay in the Kingwood/Humble area, as close to the 59/Northpark exit as possible. I advise that you plan to arrive sometime Sunday afternoon and plan to leave, if flying, no earlier than 3-4pm on Tuesday after the class.

Transportation

The Country Inn and Suites offers a shuttle to and from the airport. You can also choose to take a cab or Uber to the your hotel.  A rental car is also an option to consider, if you plan to tour the Houston area during your free time.  Once you’ve arrived, we can pick you up each day for the school and drop you back off at the hotel, if you are staying at the Country Inn and Suites.  On Tuesday, once the school has concluded, you will need to make arrangements for transportation back to the airport.

Online Video Pressure Washing School’s

Is there any additional training after the school and, if so, what is the cost?

The only additional training that you can purchase is my online video school. In fact you may want to consider purchasing it first. The online school has all the classroom classes I teach here in Houston, and over 260 additional training videos. It is a lifetime, one-time membership of $449.00 (price subject to change), and you get access to all current videos and future videos. There are also optional certification tests you can take after each module. The certification tests are $28.95 each, and there is one each for Roof Cleaning, House Washing, Concrete Cleaning, and Plant and Property Protection. If you decide to take the tests, and you pass, you can post a listing on our directory located here: https://www.pressurecleaningschool.com/directory/. We would need you to email us your logo in Digital Format to pressurecleaningschool@gmail.com  Membership to this online school also get’s you access to me for further mentoring or coaching anytime you need me at no additional charge.

The online school is not available to the local Houston Texas area.

Length of Video Classes

The Roof Cleaning class portions are about 1 and 1/2 hours spread over 4 videos. House Washing Class is about 2 and 1/2 hours spread over 5 videos. Concrete is about 30 minutes spread over 2 videos. Plant Protection is about 1 hours with 2 videos.  There are also many other training videos under these classes, but those are the main ones that you take to prepare you for the tests.  After taking and passing the tests, you can print a certificate to use for your business.

Attending my school here in Houston, or any other of my schools, DOES NOT give you free access to the online video school. It is a separate purchase. Please don’t assume that just because you pay to attend the school here that the online video school comes with that purchase. IT DOES NOT . This is why I say you may want to consider the online video school first.

Another Online Video School Choice

For those that may not be able to afford the life-time membership course,  you can choose to pay for the individual classes separately.  The prices vary ranging from $49.00 to $89.00 and you have access to only the classes needed to take the tests.  It is not a lifetime membership, and access to the classes and videos lasts 2 weeks to complete the courses from the time you register.  Once the 2 weeks expire, you no longer have access to the videos or classes.  You can check out this online power wash school at Cleaner’s University.

Even More Additional Training

Any student that attends my school will have access to me anytime they need additional help at no extra charge. This means you can text me, email me, or call me anytime you have questions, whether it be about equipment selection, bidding a job, how to clean something, etc. I also offer video conferencing when needed as well. Whatever you need, I am here to help you succeed. If I don’t know the answer, I will help you get it. I am here to help your new business be successful and to teach you how to clean using the proper process and procedures.  Remember that just because the school ends, the education does not.

Is there a Certification?

You will receive a Certificate of Attendance for Exterior Cleaning. You will also, after passing the tests, have a listing on our Web Site directory. This is not required. It is only an option if you’d like to have your business listed as a Certified Graduate.

Our school is also accepted by the UAMCC for certification through them once you qualify for testing. For more information on UAMCC certification, go to www.uamcc.org.

Difference Maker School

From time to time, I will host a Difference Maker School with a guest instructor(s).  This school is held at a local hotel where we can host more people than at my normal monthly schools.  This allows more students to attend, but at a lower cost.  The Difference Maker school is designed for those that are thinking about or just starting a pressure washing business. It is also ideal for those that have been in business for 3 years or less.  The Difference Maker school has more classroom training than hands-on training. My monthly school we are on an actual job site, cleaning a roof, house, and driveway.

difference maker school

At some of the Difference Maker schools, we provide equipment demonstration training, using the equipment I use on a daily basis. This  demonstration training is mainly designed to get you familiar with the equipment needed for your new business. Application Techniques and Equipment demonstrations allow you to get a feel for what you need to make you a success.  Agendas and format for Difference Makers SChool can change depending on Guest Instructors that may be joining me.
